TikTok's Fate in the US Remains Uncertain

Montana Judge Blocks TikTok Ban, But Senate Bill Threatens Future

The future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain after a series of recent developments. While a judge in Montana has blocked a ban on the app in that state, a bill passed by the US Senate could still lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok.

Montana Judge Blocks TikTok Ban

In March 2023, a federal judge in Montana blocked a ban on TikTok that had been imposed by the state's governor. The judge ruled that the ban violated the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech.

Senate Bill Threatens TikTok's Future

Despite the Montana judge's ruling, TikTok faces an uncertain future in the US. In April 2024, the US Senate approved a bill that would give TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, a deadline to divest its ownership of the app or face a ban. The bill must still be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by the President to become law.

TikTok's Fate Remains Uncertain

It is unclear what will happen to TikTok if the Senate bill becomes law. TikTok has said that it will challenge the bill in court, but it is possible that the app could still be banned in the US.

TikTok's Status in the UK

TikTok has not faced a nationwide ban in the UK, but in March 2023 it was banned from government devices. This ban was implemented due to concerns about TikTok's data collection practices.
